site is an attempt to catalog all flora species
found in our small
residential lot in Cocoanut Grove, Florida. The flora,
of course, is comprised
of mostly exotic, landscape plants but also includes a
number of native
species. The effort serves primarily to learn about
plant taxonomy
(unappreciated in my youthful science education) and
also to learn to
recognize native south Florida plants. |

| In addition to simple cataloging of species and documenting the basis for the identifications made, some attempt is made to describe the growth habit of the species in its specific location and to describe the light and moisture conditions in that particular location. For this reason a graphic of the lot and house are included and labeled as described in the text. Finally a separate section of lost species are included. These are primarily exotic species that did not thrive in the planting location or exotic species that were considered pests and were exterminated to prevent unwanted and possibly damaging propagation. | |||

perspective / ecosystem Before development, this area was "rockland hammock", described as flatland with limestone substrate; mesic (i.e. moderately wet); rare or no fire; closed canopy of evergreen mixed tropical hardwoods; gumbo limbo, pigeon plum, stoppers, mixed tropical hardwoods, often with live oak.
